Source of Yellow is Anawim Avila, Nick Hasty, and Peter Kerlin. The group was formed around their mutual interest in electro-acoustic music, sound processing, free improvisation, noise, krautrock, and making music without boundaries. Hasty outfitted his drums with contact mics and synths creating swelling synth tones with feedback, Kerlin played fuzz smeared ebow soundscapes on the bass and Avila squealed, howled, and caterwauled through distortions and delay. It's through this process that the band emerged with its distinct palate of propulsive rhythms, analogue sound painting, and cathartic noise, which is documented on their self-titled 2010 debut LP. On their follow-up EP, 2012's The Said, Source of Yellow takes the rhythmic, textural, and timbral work honed during years of improvising together, into a more concise song format, pulling in the harmolodic for a hug with the gothic in a muddy dance stomp, where raga style yelp intertwines with tone dialing and where the psychedelic spectrum encompasses true tonal weirdness as well as compelling housebroken sounds.
"Source of Yellow, a Brooklyn trio consisting of bass, drums, sax, and a plethora of electronics and assorted sound generators, are a true beacon of light in the seemingly eternal talentless night that has fallen on the NYC music scene. Combining metronomically precise krautboogie ur-rhythms with walls of textured electronics and sparse inventive sax playing, Source of Yellow play music that would have been right at home on both the Brain and ESP-Disk record labels. They are indebted to the great innovators of free music's past without cannibalizing them, blazing a new direction away from the necrophillic tendencies of modern music." -- Avant Ghetto
Kerlin also plays with Chris Forsyth's Paranoid Cat Band (Northern Spy) and Christy & Emily (Klangbad). He also has a solo project called Snake Eats Electric Blanket. Avila also plays bass in PA-based garage-glam group Hair Rocket. Hasty performs with his wife Nancy Garcia (Monotract), playing on her recent solo record Be the Climb (Ecstatic Peace, 2011), and was an original member of Athens, GA band Iron Hero (Stagnation Records).
